Are Aleve And Aspirin Safe Anticholinergics Medicines?

I am 74 and read an article about anticholinergics medicines. They mention bad Meds e.g. Benadryl, Advil PM, but did not mention any good medicines to take. Is aleve, aspirin, ok to take? If not what do I take that will not cause a problem? Thank You.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

To understand anticholinergics medicines, we should understand what anti-cholinergic means first. So, basically, an anticholinergic agent is a drug that blocks acetylcholine neurotransmitter in the central and periphery system.

Among them, Aleve contains the generic Naproxen. If combined with Diphenhydramin, it can be used as anticholinergic. However, the use of such medicines especially for long term, can cause serious problems with nervous system like dementia.

If you use Aleve or Aspirin alone without any such combination, that should be ok.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
