Are Augmentin And Lanzol Advisable For Fever And Mouth Sores In A Child?

Hi my son (age 3 years, weight 16 kg) had high fever (reaching 102.9) for 2 days and then developed painful mouth sores. He has been very cranky due to these mouth sores (in throat, below tongue, sides of cheeks). The sores are whitish in appearence surrounded by redness. Doctor earlier prescribed only meftal 6 hourly for the fever. after seeing the sores the doctor has now prescribed augmentin DDS twice daily 5 ml, 1 daily junior lanzol and maxtra syp 5 ml thrice a day; all for 5 days. He wrote his diagnosis as mouth ulcers. I am doubtful if it is oral herpes? and if so, is the treatment correct? Further, what other precautions i should tak e with my child. the sores are extremely painful for him.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The ulcers that you are describing could be due to infection, allergies or vitamin B complex deficiency. THe prescription your doctor has given covers the infection and allergies and the dose is correct.

The ulcers do not seems like to be due to herpes virus as fever associated with viral infection is always low grade and not 102. In addition, even if it is viral infection, there is no specific treatment for that infection and only supportive treatment can be given until body's immunity controls infection in 7-10 days. Thus, you should continue with the treatment.

I would like to add couple of medicines in treatment. First is Vitamin B complex supplement as your doctor has not covered that. You can give B-Folcin syrup 5 ml once a day for 10 days for faster healing of ulcers. In addition, you can apply local Benzocaine gel (Mucopain) over the ulcers so that the child will have soothing effect. If this gel is applied before meals, it will help in eating without burning and pain. You can apply it 3-4 times a day.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish your child feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
