Are Budesonide Capsules Safe In The Long Run?

I have collegians colitis and have been successfully on Budesonide ER for 5 years. The problem is that I am on Medicare and it is a Tier 5 drug. Taking it not only kicks me in the donut hole quicker it also cost me over $300 for a 90 day supply from Mail Order. I see that Budesonide enteric capsules are Tier 2 but maybe not approved for long term use. Is this true and why?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Budesonide on prolonged use may cause some side effects like gastritis and chances for peptic ulcer disease. You can avoid this side effects by combining Budesonide with antacids like Pantoprazole. You have to take the drug continuously and if you skip the drug it can cause flaring up of colitis. You can choose newer immunomodulators which can be used for colitis but they are very much expensive.

Wishing you all the best.
