Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are Hydrochlothiazide And Losartan Required For Atrial Fibrillation?
My friend has been prescribed hydrochlothiazide 25 mg by her GP + 100-12.5 of Losartan HCTZ by another doctor + 10 MG of Amlodipine Besylate from her heart doctor. Aren t these drugs basically similar and should she have 3 separate scripts to take daily from 3 different doctors? She has heart problems, just had ablation of heart for afib today and has two stints. I am worried she is taking way too much medication. She also takes Simvastatin (Zocor), Plavix, Sotalol, Protonix, Synthroid (Hasimoto disease), and now iron supplements as she is anemic. The heart doctor that did the afib ablation today said he wanted to try and get her off some of her meds -- his only script is the Sotalol which is recent for the afib.
Sotalol is the only medicine for afib out of these. However, the medicines which you have mentioned that is Amlodipine, Losartan and hydrochlorothiazide are antihypertensive and given if bp is not controlled with one or other medicines.
So if her bp warrants then she has to be on these medicines. Also, losartan is also necessary if her heart function is lower than normal. So, medicines may be reduced if bp allows.
Rest the remaining medicines like simvastatin, Plavix etc are necessary and needs to be continued. She should have low salt diet and regular exercise like walking.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Sagar Makode, Cardiologist
