Are Lupron And Flutamide An Effective Alternative Hormonal Treatment For Prostate Cancer, Rising PSA And Bone Metastases After Refusing Orchiectomy?

The patient is a 55-year-old male with adenocarcinoma of the prostate. He had a TURP 1 year ago for presumed prostatic hyperplasia, but tissue fragments examined by a pathologist revealed a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. He received local irradiation to the prostate; however, PSA levels increased to 10 (normal is less than 4). A bone scan showed bony metastases. Bilateral orchiectomy was advised, but refused. Alternative hormonal treatment with Lupron and flutamide to decrease testosterone production will be offered.

Oncologist 's  Response
Hello,

The patient requires a pet CT for evaluation of metastatic disease if any, followed by some form of systemic therapy in the form of androgen receptor blockade therapy or chemotherapy. Many patients survive for longer periods of time with complete evaluation and chemotherapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepak Sundriyal, Oncologist
