Are Thyronorm Pills Advisable For Elevated Thyroid Levels?

Hello Doctor! Since i had severe hairfall problem the dermatologist suggested me to test my thyroid hormone. And the report says that T3 & T4 is normal where as TSH value is 6.95. (A recent test report). Our family physician says that, there is no symptom for me relater to hyperthyroidism but it may be called as sub clinical hyperthyroidism. I am being prescribed with Thyronorm 50 mg for 3 months. I just started taking these tablets. Can you pls tell me whether the TSH value will become normal in sometime. How long should i take tablets. I have hairfall along with a little sleepy feel through out the day (keeps me yawning all day long).

Hi,

Elevated TSH levels indicate Hypothyroidism and not hyperthyroidism. You are sub-clinically hypothyroid which means that you are in the early stages. Thyroxine supplementation is essential. Your levels will normalise in the following months.Monitor your Free T3, T4 and TSH levels after 20 to 30 days.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
