Are Antidepressants Necessary While Suffering From Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

I have been on antidepressants for 15 years (after my Mother died).., at the same time I also found out that I had Hashimoto s. They put me on propranolol which made me very depressed. Was it necessary to put me on antidepressants when my thyroid was causing the issue. I am always lethargic, no interest in anything, and doing anything is too much of a chore. I was also going through menopause for many years.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If the dose of levothyroxine is the right one, it means if the thyroid hormones are within the normal ranges under treatment, than we suggest to treat depression in a patient with Hashimoto thyroiditis. But before starting treatment you must be sure that the dose of levothyroxine is the right one.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
