Are Condoms Sufficient For Protection Against Pregnancy?

I am a 49 year old woman...overweight...getting married in 2 months...turning 50 in December. My doctor wants me to go off the pill (combination pill) by the time I'm 50. Are condoms enough protection against pregnancy at my age? Is there any type of pill (possibly progestin only) that will work for me?
