Are Constant Cough With Gagging And Watery Eyes A Concern?

Since my early childhood 30 years ago I have cough attacks which have no pattern. I get suddenly a dry tickle on the side in my throat, I am coughing till the point of gagging, eyes water. No drinking or eating will help make this go away. The attacks last 5 - 10 seconds. I checked my throat in the mirror and can see the tonsils bulging during the attack. I don t smoke and don t have allergies and live healthy. Attacks are very irregular. Have you heard about this before and do you have a solution?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to 30 year old patient having a problem of feeling trickle in throat followed by a bout of coughing that lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds. The most common cause I can think about are as follows:
The nature and duration of your symptoms are indicative that there may a be trigger point in throat that gets irritated which in turn gives the feeling of trickle and spasmodic cough.
So nothing serious about it and should not be worried about.
Although you have seen in mirror, it is advisable to get an examination done by a an ENT Surgeon to know whether there is any problem or the inspection is within normal.
MRI study of neck and pharynx can help to rule out any organic reason or if something is confirmed then it helps for specific treatment.
Helps in ruling out elongated styloid process and such conditions which can be cause of your symptoms.
Unless a specific cause is found no treatment will be effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
