Are Edema And Toe Knuckle Joint Pain Related?

I am 26, I have pitting edema in my left leg (my nurse friend says grade 4) and I kept my feet elevated all night last nit and now the right one has it too. My big toe knuckle joint is killing mento the point I can't bend it. Are the two connected? How do I get rid of it?
