Are Having Blood In Stools And Seizures While Having Kidney And Heart Problems A Cause For Concern?

I just found out that my 90 year old step father fell down last night and while my mother was trying to help him get turned over on his hands and knees he had what she is calling a ceasure. This would be the first time to my knowledge that he has ever had a ceasure. She said it lasted about 30 - 40 seconds then she finally got him up and put him to bed. I am feeling like I should be very concerned. He does have dementia, congestive heart failure and kidney disease. Also, he is wearing a protective pad for incontenence and my mother found it laying on that bathroom floor this morning full of a combonation of blood and stool. He seems to be fine today according to my mother, but I am just wondering if I should insist about taking him to the doctor?

Hello,

The causes of blood in stools are:
1) Anal fissure
2) Anal fistula
3) Hemorrhoids
4) Rectal or colon cancer
5) Colon polyps

A gastroenterologist must investigate and find out the actual cause of bleeding per rectum. Seizure should be evaluated as he is 90 yr old, there is a possibility of any intracranial tumor. He needs a CT brain. If necessary, an MRI brain. Please take him to a neuro-physician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
