Are High Heart Rates Due To Body Combat Classes A Danger?

I am female enjoying Body Combat class at age 62. I wear HR monitor on chest/wrist. My HR goes over my max rate of 158 (220-age);sometimes as high as 178 but not discomfort or breathing difficulty. Am I endangering myself? Hope not as I really enjoy this high intensity exercise.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After going through the medical details provided by you I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that heart rate is ever changing phenomena depending on your physical activity, emotional stress and physiological changes. Increased heart rate during exercise is pretty obvious but considering your age I will advise you to get an Echocardiography and treadmill test done as a basic cardiac check up. If they came back normal your are good to go on your healthy lifestyle habits.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
