Are Nightmares And Excessive Crying A Side Effect Of Surgery?

hi my 3 year old son is 3 days after a tonsillectomy, he s recovering beautifully and rarely complains about the pain and he didn t have a bad experience at the hospital. one thing I m concerned about is that he started having really bad nightmares and wakes up crying since the surgery. is this a normal side effect?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the nightmares and excessive crying post surgery is many times a normal physiologic response in many pediatric age group patients.

* It is the retrograde memory which makes child recall the traumatic events of operation theatre, surgeon in OT gown, mask and supportive team of anesthetics giving general anesthesia and making him dumb for the surgery.

* He requires exclusively supportive and tender loving care in this
recovery phase of surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
