Are Painful Redness At The Palatoglossal Arch Apart From Sore Throat A Serious Concern When It Is Difficult To Swallow?

Hi, my throat has been hurting for maybe 4-5 days now. I looked in the mirror and google pics and found the Palatoglossal Arch very red and painful to swallow. I am currently on strep medication from around 10 days ago so I know it isn’t strep. What is it?

Hello,

Your symptoms are indicative of pharyngitis. Gargle your throat with warm salt water. Do this 2 to 3 times a day. Do not talk unnecessarily, stay at rest. Take sips of water throughout the day and stay well hydrated.

You should get swab tests, sputum tests done. To get rid of pain, take acetaminophen or NSAIDs, one stat when needed. Take medicines after food. Keep cough lozenges in the mouth to avoid coughing and for relieve. Take liquid diet or semi solid diet so that you do not hurt your throat.

Taking antihistamine at bedtime will help to get rid of discomfort at night. Get clinically examined by an ENT, if required you will be treated with a course of Augmentin. To stay on the safer side, get STD tests done. If found positive, you will be treated with antibiotics / anti-virals. Stay away from smoking & alcohol as it will trigger the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
