Are The Palpitation Related To High Cholesterol?

My heart beats normal but there are times when it stops a bit and beats one time and another time really slowly. I stop what I'm doing because it comes all of a sudden. Like as if it takes its time to pump out blood. I don't know, it's like something presses against my heart and it stops. I'm 16 and average weight and height. It's been happening for almost two years. When I was really little, i had high chorestorol, do you think that that may have something to do with it?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to anxiety, especially considering your young age.

Anyway, I would recommend performing some tests in order to investigate for possible cardiac arrhythmia and other metabolic causes that may mimic this clinical scenario:
- a resting ECG
- a complete blood count for anemia
- thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction
- blood electrolytes for possible electrolyte imbalance
- an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring to investigate for possible cardiac arrhythmia.

If all the above tests result normal, you should consider anxiety as the main cause of your complaints.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist
