Are The Side Effects Of Using Mirena?

I have had my IUD Mirena in for about 4 months now. Just recently during and after sex I have really bad cramping and lower back pain and my uterus seems swollen and sore to the touch. It does go away the next day but I am just wondering if it has something to do with the IUD itself?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

IUD (intra uterine device) like Mirena may cause abdominal cramps especially in the initial periods of insertions. Generally it will resolve in a couple of months. As a first line of treatment, you can take simple analgesics like Paracetamol. If the symptoms persist and you can’t tolerate the device, then it is better to get it removed and try other contraceptive methods. Your gynecologist can provide detailed explanation.

Wishing all the best.

Thanks.
