Are There Any Interactions Between Losartan And Trimethoprim?

My mother has been prescribed losartam, trimethoprim, and 5 5 100mg potassium a day and the pharmacist caught it as a toxic mix. Her kidney is showing up as not working as well and they are saying because of her age 89. What do you suggest she does automatically stop the trimethoprim

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Since both losartan [potassium sparing diuretic] and Trimethoprim [common antibiotic] increases the potassium level in the blood resulting in dangerous hyperkalemia [can cause dangerous heart rhythm irregularities] thus one should not take the combination [as she is also prescribed potassium]

2. As she is also a geriatric patient [89 years] thus there is decline in kidney function as such individual monitoring of the drug under doctor supervision is important.
