Are There Any Risks During Pregnancy After Undergoing LEEP Procedure?

I had a leep procedure done on Feb. 7th due to moderate /severe dysplasia. I found out last week that I am pregnant ( at about the five week mark today) I am still bleeding g after sex which I was told was due to the leep procedure. I am concerned what the possible risks could be to the pregnancy. It was unexpected and I am concerned because I obviously have not had a lot of time to heal.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

A LEEP procedure is not recommended to be performed during pregnancy because it can cause heavier bleeding at the time of the procedure and afterwards. However the time of healing should be the same as anyone else- it takes a full six weeks to heal completely. You may have irregular bleeding on and off beforehand and also a foul smelling discharge which is normal.
You should not put anything inside the vagina either until 6 weeks have passed, including tampons or intercourse, because it can cause you to bleed very heavily.
In terms of the prognosis for the pregnancy, when you have an ultrasound to measure the pregnancy, they will also measure the length of your cervix. If you healed properly from the LEEP and have a good cervical length, your risk of any pregnancy complications are the same as anyone else.

I hope this information was helpful and that I was able to answer your question.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
