Are There Any Side Effects Of Taking Clomid?

My husband and I are trying to conceive our second child. I have always had irregular periods and after I had my daughter I had a total of 4 months where I didn't get a period at all. It came back on its own but went right back into its irregular ways and my cycles would be anywhere from 30-50 days. This time around my doctor has put me on 50mg of Clomid. This is my first cycle and the first time I have ever taken it. I started taking it on Cycle Days 5-9 as stated by my doctor with Cycle day 1 being the first day of my period. Well my period was to end on cycle day five and I am not on cycle day 8 and I have spotting. I know it might be to much information but the spotting is enough to require a panty liner and I do have menstrual cramping. I am wondering if this is a normal reaction on Clomid? If so, will this affect ovulation? Is this round of Clomid essentially a bust?
