Are There Any Treatments For Vein Spams When Accessing Vessel For PICC

Hi, I am a PICC nurse in a NY hospital. We have been having some recent issues with vein spasms when accessing the vessel to place a PICC line in younger adult patients mostly. We were wondering if this is a common thing happening elsewhere, and if so, is there anything being used to help prevent this?

Hi,
Welcome to healthcare Magic!
You can use local infilteration of 2% xylocaine to anesthetise the vessels so that they would not go in spasm. The infilteration should be done 1-2 inches above the area of skin prick. The procedure should be done under USG guidance and full asepsis.
I hope the advise would be informative and useful for you.
Take Care!
