Are Tremors In The Hands A Hereditary Condition?

My grandfather had, and my mother (89 years old) has, and I occasionally now have slight hand tremors, generally lasting less than a minute--and usually intensified if I focus on it. No other symptoms. I know some of the causes, which don t seem to fit. Can this be a hereditary condition?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tremors can be an inherent(autosomal dominant) disorder but it can also occur due to other causes, commonly due to thyroid dysfunction/hypoglycemia. Get a medical check up done to screen out thyroid problems. Physical therapy on a daily basis can help to keep tremors under control. Avoid addictions if any, eliminate even caffeine from daily usage. Medications that can be helpful are Propranolol & Primidone. Take B12 with Folic acid, zinc & magnesium. Get neurological tests done & get treated to avoid worsening of the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
