Are Vomiting And High Fever Associated With Bacterial Infection?

Granddaughter has been vomiting and running high fever since last Friday. Was taken to Dr. this past Mon., he said stomach virus, be ok in a day or so. but she still is not ok. I told daughter I think more is going on and she should go to dr. again. What do you think? maybe bacterial infection instead of regular stomach virus?

Hi,

It might be an abdominal infection, caused by a bacteria or a virus. The viral infection is commoner in the pediatric age group and takes longer to subside. Bacterial infection subsides, once the antibiotics start to act.

Give her oral antipyretic paracetamol for fever and do cold sponging. Give a soft diet. Please visit the pediatrician immediately if the fever goes over 101 degrees in spite of all efforts (risk of seizures), if oral intake is severely hampered, there are intractable vomiting s or signs of dehydration are seen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

If she is with loose stools too then its food poisoning. Yes, a bacterial infection can definitely lead to fever and excess fever can lead to vomiting. But the cause of and focus of infection must be ruled out. In her case, it seems gastritis. antibiotics and antiemetics for a few days with light liquid diet should suffice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
