Been Diagnosed With Cerebellar Degeneration. Have Dramatic Cognitive Decline. Why? Is It Binswamger's Disease?
Hello! I have been diagnosed with cerebellar degeneration for 10.5 years and now I am presenting dramatic cognitive decline (short term memory problems, working memory, executive function, semantic memory problems, visual-spatial, etc). In addition to cerebellar ataxia , i have aphasia, both got better, including swallowing problems, during the past year and a half. In MRI they found two bilateral periventricular FLAIR Hyperintensities in 2009 and now an additional one in the external capsule. Also I realized very recently that my hypertension is not controlled and I doubled the medication but that doesnt t always help. Mt thinking is that I have developed a Vascular dementia and I think it is Binswamger s disease. I am 46 years old. What is the life expectancy and prognosis of this disease?

Binswangers is a disorders with diffuse vascular changes, unlike your mri where you have noticed couple of white matter lesions. Patients with cerebellar degeneration can also develop cognitve changes, depending upon type and stage of cerebellar degeneration. Your neurophysician can assess you and can clarify your ambiguity.
