Bleeding. Bulky Ovaries And Cysts In Ovary. Consequences And Remedy?

A friend of mine is having bleeding for last 3 months.Upon diagnosis, it is found that her ovaries are slightly bulky and the surface of uterus is covered by small cysts. Her peripheral areas are cystic with central Echogenic stroma-s/o PCOD. The doctor with whom she checked only suggested her to reduce her weight but she hasn't gained her weight recently. She is of 61 kgs and 5 feet 6 inchs tall. Is this the normal disease? What are the consequences and what are the remedies?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood your concerns. Polycystic ovarian disease is a very common clinical condition seen in women of reproductive age now a days. I advice you to take some good advice from a gynecologist as there has been so many newer treatments included for pcod. If you were my patient I will first advice you tab.pause for the bleeding to get control and then if your friend is facing infertility problem then clomifen citrate may be prescribed and if not for regular periods oral contraceptives are of good choice. Metformin also plays an important role in the treatment. Consequences includes :
-Infertility
-weigh gain
-irregular periods
-heavy bleeding
-cyst rupture
-anemia due to heavy bleeding
As all the above mentioned consequences can be prevented good suggestions are needed. Weight loss as your doctor mentioned will help you a lot to get back to you into normal soon. Thank you.

Hi

Thanks for your query

PCOD is polycystic ovarian disease is a most common hormonal reproductive problem in young females.
Reasons for this disease are unknown but it is more common in overweight females, although hereditary link up is also seen but not yet proven.

According to height and weight of your friend she doesn't seen to be overweight as her BMI is nearly 21 which is normal.
Maybe there is some other reason for this disease.

PCOD in many cases is not troublesome and do not effect fertility.
Actually the problem starts when cysts create hormonal imbalance.
In extreme it can lead to overweight, scanty or no periods, acne, anovulation leading to infertility, excessive hair growth, pelvic pain, mood swings, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, high cholesterol.

Vitamins and mineral supplements and weight loss can help to some extent.
But in extreme case proper medication according to symptoms is needed.

Regards.
