Blood Clot At The Bottom Of The Tongue. What Could It Be?
Hello Doctor, My grandma just showed me a huge blood at the right bottom side of her tongue , it is as big as a peanut and it looks really uncomfortable. Do you know the seriousness of this and what could this be? Should we take her to the ER or just wait and take her to the doctor tomorrow? is there a home remedy for this? What is this blood clot?
Hello & welcome
don't worry, it seems like ranula, a painless cyst usually occur under the tongue.
This occur because of obstruction of some salivary gland duct.
Sometime it ruptures by itself, but if this is very uncomfortable or paining you can visit to your dentist.
even after cure there are chances of recurrence.
take care & thanks
Hello there, this type of swelling is a mucocele, cystic swelling called ranula. It is fluctulant swelling caused by rupturing of sublingual salivary glands. It is a painless condition but secondary infection may lead to pain so visit an oral surgeon soon and get the entire lump excised along with the involved salivary gland. improper removal of cystic lining may lead to recurrence. i hope i added to your knowledge. all the best.
Blood clot appearing in the floor of the tongue represents a ranula which is painless cyst which is formed because of the obstruction in the salivary duct.. If it is creating discomfort it can be removed . before the procedure general health status of your grandma is important soo get a concern from general physician before the procedure especially if she is diabetic
thank you.
Blood clot at the bottom of the tongue which is painless can be a ranula which is formed by obstruction of the salivary gland duct.
Sometimes it may rupture by itself.
If it becomes secondarily infected can lead to pain.
I would suggest you to visit a Oral Surgeon and get the lump excised, even after cure chances of recurrence are high.
Also get your blood sugar level analysed before procedure.
Maintain a good oral hygiene, use lukewarm saline and antiseptic mouthwash rinses.
Sudden painless swelling at the right bottom side of your grand mother can be ranula which is a result of obstruction of the duct of sublingual salivary gland.
Sometimes it can be ruptured itself,if not it can be surgically excised by an oral surgeon.
But recurrence rate is very high even after proper excision.
So i would suggest you consult an oral surgeon and get this salivary gland excised properly.
Hope this will be helpful.
Take care.
