For thalassemia this test is not sufficient to diagnose it however it can tell about the severity to some extent. Hemoglobin level of 12.0 g/dl does not suggest thalassemia however, if you are member of an ethnic group that's at increased risk for thalassemias then Doctors also test the amount of iron in the blood to find out whether the anemia is due to iron deficiency or thalassemia. If iron is normal then spesific hemoglobin test for thalassemia will tell if it is present or not .
I suggest that you should visit a hematologist if you are a member of ethnic group that's at increased risk for thalassemias.
