Blood Work Done. All Levels Normal, Anion Gap Low. What Is The Normal Range?

Hi, I just got my lab bloodwork back and all my levels are normal within range, except for an anion gap of 6.0--the normal listing being 8-16. My reading last year was 9.4 and the year before 6.5 (again low). At that time I my doctor never mentioned it. I also have read about the other measurement of normal being 3-11 depending on how the lab does the test. But on the lab sheet as I said "they" have normal as 8-16. Thanks, Steve

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
You should understand every investigation needs clinical correlation in the same way anion gap requires to be correlated clinically.

Normal anion gap as
A low anion gap is frequently caused by hypoalbuminemia.
Albumin is a negatively charged protein

Bicarbonate and chloride anions are used to calculate the anion gap, there is a subsequent decrease in the gap.

You should visit Physician and discuss about the result if everything is normal including serum proteins then nothing to worry.

Hope this helps.
Take care
Good Luck.
