I was going to bed a couple of nights ago, and I noticed some pain on my right breast. I started feeling around, and right above my nipple, one of the areolas was swollen. It hurts when anything touches it, and it is bigger than usual. It is the only one that is like this. What could it be? I heard about the Montgomery glands, and my sister said it might even be an ingrown hair...but I don't know. Any answers?
Sorry to hear about your problem. This could be due to eczema affecting the nipple area, which is commonest cause for pain and itching in that area. If it is associated with a lump, it can be a sign of underlying cancer. Ingrown hair is another rare possibility.
It is best that you get this evaluated by a breast surgeon.
