Breathing Problem, Wheezing, Coughing. Taking Medication, No Improvement. Is This Pneumonia?

Hi Dr. Grief,

Thank you for being available for my question. I am 55 yr. old female. Just came down last week with difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, left side of lung hurts so badly from coughing, left side of nose draining heavy green mucous, and coughing up green phlegm. This all started after l weeks vacation staying in pet-friendly room as I have a dog, but personally, I also think the air conditioning needs to be cleaned! My daughter called my PCP on Sunday early PM and no answer as we were headed home, so I had her call my pharmacisit & when we arrived home he gave me over the counter chest, cough, mucous pill to take. I did that for 3 days, still no better, PCP just put me on the 5 day Z pack, rt. now lft nostril heavy mucous, migraine, still coughing up phlegm. Is this pneumonia? thanks Beth from RI

ENT Specialist 's  Response
It can be legionella infection leading to pneumonia. ..but your symptoms are more in favour of allergy. Do you have any history of asthma? Just send your sputum for culture and sensitivity and get a chest x-ray done. Start with some good antibiotic like moxifloxacin 400 once daily. Tab. Etophylline and tab. Montair - LC before sleep. Take steam inhalation too. U may need nebuliser too.
