Buzzing Sound And Discharge From The Ear. On Astorvastatin, Amlodepine And Glycomet. Need Advice

In my left I hear a noise like the one that comes from a small transformer. This has been so for 18 years. It started without any known reason. I have become used to it. Now, for the last 4 days, some thick fluid comes from the right year, at night only. I clean it with buds in the morning. It gives no smell. But now I hear the noise from the right ear also, and the shrill is louder.
My sebum secretion is on the higher side. I am 65. Male. Taking atorvastatin 5mg, amlodepine5 mg, ramipril 2.5mg, glycomet 250mg twice.
My request: advice regarding ear problem.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Firstly, let me address your noise problem. In very simple terms, Noise - tinnitus, is produced due to various causes. One of the common causes is weakness of the nerves connecting ears to brain; the nerves generate a small amount of noise in every person but because of the outside noise this gets obliterated. This noise is perceived by a person hard of hearing as he cannot hear external sounds well and obliteration does not happen. There are various ways of treating this including using hearing aids to improve external sounds, ignoring the tinnitus, tinnitus retraining therapies etc. You seem to have done this treatment yourself as you have learned to live with it; which is very good!

Now, your right ear - stop using buds; it could be some kind of otitis externa; an infection of your ear canal. Presence of wax and fluid in canal can also cause tinnitus. Also, as you are diabetic and hypertensive it could also be that your left ear nerves are also weaker now than before and hence tinnitus. If the fluid does not stop in next 2-3 days or if symptoms worsen, I would advice you to visit an ENT for identifying your right side ear problem and treating it.

Sreenivasan
