Can Adderall Affect HCG Levels In A Blood Test?

Hi doctor Ajith, I was dating a girl for a few months and we had sex one time with a condom. The condom did not break I do know that things can happen even with a condom and it not busting. We had sex about 1 week before she was supposed to have her period. She usually has her period on around the 4th or 5th of every month. She has been under a great amount of stress lately. Her aunt has been going in and out of a coma along with other factors besides her thinking that she is pregnant. She also takes Adderall for her ADHD. She had a blood test done a week ago to see if she was pregnant her doctor told her that the test came back negative but that she needed to come back in 2 weeks to have an ultrasound done because Adderall can cause false negatives to appear. I was wondering if Adderall could possibly affect the HCG levels in a woman's blood to cause a blood test to return a false negative. Thank you for you help.

Hello, and i hope i can help you today.

Adderall does not have any effect on pregnancy hormone levels. Therefore, if your girlfriend had a negative serum pregnancy test, even though her cycle may be late and she feels pregnant, she is not pregnant.

The only way the pregnancy test could be a false negative is if it was done too early since your act of intercourse. It takes about 10 days to 2 weeks from conception to detect an adequate level of pregnancy hormone on a test.

The best way to proceed is to repeat the blood test (not an ultrasound, which can only see a pregnancy at 5-6 weeks gestation) in 2 weeks and if that test is negative, then she is definitely not pregnant.

Many women can miss a menstrual cycle due to stress, hormone imbalances, or even worrying about pregnancy. Furthermore, if you wore a condom teh whole time you had intercourse and it did not break, your chance of pregnancy is only about 5 percent.

So in summary, Adderal has no effect on HCG levels and would not cause a negative pregnancy test.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information is reassuring.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
