Can Aggrenox Be Taken For Blood Clots In The Lungs?

My husband just got out of the hospital with blood clots (3) in his lungs. He chose to take the coumadine (?) and lovenox. Can he take the Aggranox instead? His blood count is 2.6 now. He chose this instead of paying $291.00 a month for another form of drug. He did not have a stroke, but had to go back into the hospital because he had pneumonia.

Hi,

No, Aggrenox is not an alternative to Coumadin. In fact, Aggrenox also causes thinning of blood but its mechanic is different and it does not dissolve a clot if already made. While this is used to avoid the formation of clots in many people but it cannot be used for already formed clots.

Yes, there are other newer agents that can be used for blood clot instead of Coumadin but as you said those are very expensive.

So I think he needs to continue with Coumadin with all the precaution he must be told. The INR of 2.6 is quite good.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
