Can Armodafinil And Oxycodone-Acetaminophen Be Taken Together?

Are there any interactions bewtween Armodafinil 250 mg tab and Oxycodone-Acetaminophe 10-325 tab? I think maybe the two actually make me drowsier than just taking Oxycodone. I have fallen asleep at the wheel momentarily, and once had an accident because of drowsiness. It seems the two work in ways tocontraindicate each other. One to sedate and ease pain, the other to excite and keep one awake. I m just a layman and don t know anything.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is not safe to take these medications together.

Acetaminophen (non-opioid pain reliever)-Oxycodone (opioid or narcotic) is commonly used for the relief of moderate to severe pain.

Common side effects of Oxycodone include dizziness, drowsiness or sedation, nausea, and vomiting. It can also cause shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, and fall in blood pressure.

Armodafinil drug is a central nervous system stimulant commonly used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or shift work sleep disorder.

If taken together Armodafinil may reduce the blood levels of Oxycodone which may make the medication less effective in treating your pain. Additionally, it may also cause you to experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, yawning, excessive sweating, chills, flushing, restlessness, irritability, anxiety, depression, pupil dilation, tremor, rapid heartbeat, body aches, involuntary twitching and kicking, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea.

On the other hand, discontinuing Armodafinil may increase the blood levels of Oxycodone, which could lead to an overdose.

So, in view of the above harmful interactions, you should consult your treating doctor for effective alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
