Can Asprin Be Taken With Keppra, Depakote And Vimpat?

My 91-yr-old mother takes 3 anti-seizure meds: Keppra, Depakote & Vimpat, plus Lopressor, can she take her 81mg daily aspirin with any of these, or should it be separate? (She had seizures nearly a year ago, never before, they didn t discover the reason for them, perhaps dehydration, they really didn t know). Is it possible for her to eliminate one or more of the anti-seizure meds? Also, in the hospital she had 2 or 3 incidents of a-fib, if her blood pressure is normal to low, does she still need the Lopressor for a-fib? Thank you very much, we appreciate your help, Melanie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Most doctors would consider tapering off or reducing seizure medications if a person has been seizure free for at least 2 years especially if the cause of the seizures is not known.

In terms of the Lopressor for a fib, the medication would not be dependent entirely on her blood pressure but on the presence of fibrillation (abnormal heart rate or rhythm).

If the blood pressure is running too low, however, the dose can be adjusted.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
