Ativan was givin to my 90 year old uncale and he isn t the same any more. From normal to staring to nothing. He was taken into the hospital from a fall no ingery but keep to run tests. He didn t hit his head but no in a convalescent home cause this Dr. Gave him Ativan. Even the nurse convicted in me that was wrong for elderly patients. Is this a drug that should not been given to him for his age.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Ativan is an anxiolytic drug. In elderly patients it has a prolonged action due to slow metabolism.. thus prone to cause a collective action ...making it's toxicity prominent. That is why it's avoided in elderly as far as possible . It's use sometimes becomes essential & it's totally jurisdiction of treating doctor. When given it is given in adjusted lower dose to suit the needs of patient. Thanks.
