Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a CT with oral IV contrast today at noon and took Barium Sulfate. I didn t notice a strong metallic taste, but I did have a slight metallic taste in my mouth and still do, slightly. Also, I ve since gotten a fever of 99.5 and have had diarrhea and nausea. However, I had the CT to test for gastrointestinal issues (particularly possible diverticulitis or IBS). I have had an ongoing low grade fever, ranging from 98.9-99.9 but have not had one in over a week and a half. Should I be concerned about this possible reaction to the barium contrast?
Hi & Welcome to HCM. Yes, it may cause certain side effects. Basically used to help diagnose certain disorders of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines, Barium sulfate is generally well tolerated. However, it may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, severe cramping, diarrhea, or constipation in some individuals. The fact that you have been suffering from low grade fever for quite sometime the possibility of some underlying infection of the intestinal tract should also be considered. Hope the suggestion given would enable you to seek proper medical care from your treating physician or gastroenterologist.
