Can Bisoprolol Be Taken While Having The Heart Rate Of 50 Bpm?

Hi I am writing for my father. He is a known case of HTN and AF. His doctor asked him to take concor (Bisoprolol). However, slow heart rate is its one of the side effects. His pulses are normally around 60 bpm. Last week he had some problems and found that his heart rate was close to 50 bpm. Is it safe to have concor for my father? Please advise

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not safe to take bisoprolol while having decreased heart beats. Bradycardia (decreased heart beats) is an important side effect of heart-selective beta receptor blocker bisoprolol which may result in lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, falls and injuries.

Consult his doctor for either a dose reduction of bisoprolol or for an alternate effective but a safer medicine to treat HTN and AF.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
