im almost 30 weeks pregnant and before i got pregnant I was taking cipralex that really helped my anxiety and depression. Can I go back on it as soon as I have given birth? Found my pregnancy very difficulr especially as relationship with babies father has gone nasty and soliciors involved and im going to be a single parent and have money worries. Don't want to risk getting post depression. I will bottle feed if i can. Thanks

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Cipralex is a very effective antidepressant that can even be taken during pregnancy, however use during the third trimester is not advised because newborns born to mothers on the class of antidepressants called SSRI's can occasionally have problems breathing at birth. However, if your mood is so severe that you are not taking good care of yourself or your baby, taking the medication during pregnancy may be worth the risk

However, these drugs are not readily secreted in breast milk, so you certainly may take them postpartum, and you may safely breastfeed while taking the medication. I recommend you start the medication right away after delivery, as women with a history of depression have a very high risk of postpartum depression.

I wish you the best for the rest of the pregnancy and hope you found this information helpful.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
