Can Excedrin Be Taken Safely By Someone With Chronic Pain?

I have been in constant pain this week with what feels like arthritis due to a fall I had a month ago. I ve had it checked out.....no broken bones. I ve been using Excedrin but am worried that may damage my kidneys. What would be a safer and more effective for my pain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It is not advisable to take Excedrin for chronic pain.

Excedrin (Acetaminophen, Aspirin, and caffeine) is used for short term treatment of pain caused by tension headaches, migraine headaches, muscle aches, menstrual cramps, joint pains, toothaches, or common cold.

On prolonged use it may cause stomach related issues like gastritis, ulcer or bleeding or kidney problems due to Aspirin. Increased heart beats, palpitations, tremors can occur with the use of Caffeine.

You are advised to consult an orthopedic surgeon to rule out arthritis.
Paracetamol alone or with an opioid drug like Tramadol is a safe medication for the symptomatic relief of chronic pain.

Hope these answer your queries.
