Can Fluconazole Be Used To Treat Bacterial Infection?

Does fluconazole have any anti-bacterial effects? I understand that it is an anti-fungal agent, but would it help in the case of a bacterial infection? Not interested in this service ---had no idea the question would cost $15. Do not put my email on your distribution list.

Hi & Welcome.
No, it is not effective to treat bacterial infection.

Fluconazole is an Azole anti-fungal drug commonly prescribed to prevent and treat a variety of fungal and yeast infections.

It works by inhibiting the fungal Cytochrome P-450 enzymes responsible for the formation of fungal cell wall. As a result of this inhibition the fungal cell becomes leaky and thus the fungus gets killed easily.

Since bacterial cell wall has no Cytochrome P-450 dependent cell wall synthesis, hence Fluconazole can not bind and kill the bacteria. Thus Fluconazole is not effective in the eradication of infections caused by the bacteria.

Hope this answers your query.

Fluconazole has not effect on bacteria. It is purely an anti-fungal agent. It is not used for treatment of bacterial infection. There are several antibiotics available for treatment of bacterial infection. Some of the popular antibiotics are ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone, azithromycin etc. You have not written details of your current illness. If you would have written details about current illness, I could have suggested in details. You can write later on.
Advice
1.     Do not use fluconazole for treatment of bacterial infection
2.     Ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, ceftriaxone, and azithromycin are popular anti-bacterial agents. But do not use it indiscriminately. Indiscriminate use of anti-bacterial can cause development of antibiotic resistant bacteria
3.     Take antibiotic on doctor’s recommendation only

I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
Thanks
