Can I Contract Herpes Infection After Unprotected Sex?

Hello Doctor,

Last night I had unprotected sex with a woman. An hour later she tells me she has herpes type 2, but has no had an outbreak in nearly a year. Now I am worried that I will contract the virus. What are my chances?

PS.. I also performed oral on her.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

The majority of herpes cases are spread through intimate contact e.g direct skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has an active infection.
Having said that the virus is being shed from time to time even in those who don't have an active episode of herpes and these individuals cannot be assumed to be non-infectious just because they don't have an active episode.
The chances are less though as compared with someone who has an active episode of herpes.
I would therefore suggest that you get a blood test for herpes at round about 2 weeks from this particular sexual contact.
Moreover, if you notice any sores or erosions in the genital area you should get yourself checked with a venereologist.

Regards
Always practice safe sex with a condom!
