Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I hope I can help you today. There are many types of
progesterone that are prescribed both during
pregnancy and also types that are used for
contraception. Depo-Provera is one type of progesterone that is used for contraception that is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
The reason for that is that this type of progesterone has been associated with certain types of
urinary tract birth defects in male infants. The type of progesterone that is in
Endogest is used during
fertility treatment to help supplement the natural progesterone made by the body. Even if your blood levels are normal you still can benefit from additional progesterone to help stabilize the uterine lining and reduce the risk of
miscarriage.
It is generally recommended that you continue taking the progesterone through the entire first trimester pregnancy. However, stopping taking it should have no ill effects as your own body's progesterone should be in adequate levels to support your pregnancy. If you have bleeding after discontinuing the medication, you should consider returning to your physician for an examination.
I hope that I was adequately able to answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
