Can I Take Hydrochlorothiazide While Suffering From Osteoarthritis And Hypertension?

Hi, I have been diagnosed with hypertension and have been taking Apo-Cilazapril/Hydrochlorothiazide , Atorvastin, and asprin ph.fur.100mg. I am also taking 1500 fish oil capsule daily, and Glucosamine1500 complex and have recently started to take osteo tabs to ward off osteoathritits. I have managed to loose approx 10 kilos over the past 6 months, as have found the weight loss beneficial to my being able to cope with my knee.(I twisted this on holiday overseas) I also am a keen lawn bowler, so am getting lots of excercise, however, I am now experiencing really sore bones in my upper legs, and am also experiencing lists of cramp in my calves and back of legs. My age is 73,
have recently retired from work, although I have always been very active and have played many sports, I have never had this problem before. I am particularly concerned about the side effects the statins have etc. Is the cramping and sore bones a result of taking these? I look forward to your reply.Thankyou. Gillian

Dear Gilliam first of all hats off to you for keeping yourself so fit. Pain in your muscles could be a side effect of atorvastatin. It could also be due to salt depleting action of chlorthiazid. Although it is a good drug for hypertension. Muscular pain can LSO be due to uncontrolled high blood pressure. So please get your blood pressure checked, if it is high get it under controll under your doctor' s guidance. Also get your serum sodium and potassium checked to rule out effect of chlorthiazide. If their values are altered you need to stop chlorthiazide. If these values are within normal limits then ask your doctor to change atorvastatin to other anti cholesterol drug depending on your lipid profile.
