Can Levest Be Started In The Middle Of The Menstrual Cycle?

Hello, I have never ever taken contraceptive pills before. So I visited the nurse to talk about it today. She prescribed Levest 150/30 for me. Earlier today I searched up information about it anyway and it said that I should take it on the 1st day of my period or even on the 5th if it s my first time taking it. So I asked if I could take I could take it if I wasn t on my period as I ve just finished my period 2 weeks ago which would mean I d have to wait. She said I could start taking it today if I wanted even when I am not on my period and could even start having sex a week from now...I wanted to know if this was correct information and what I should do because I haven t found any information saying this?

Hi,

Yes, Levest can be started in the middle of your menstrual cycle but you need additional contraceptive like condom or diaphragm. You would be protected from pregnancy straight away if you start taking Levest pill on the first day of your period (day one of your menstrual cycle). You do not need additional contraception.

However, if you start taking Levest on any other day of your cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy straight away and will need additional contraception like condom or diaphragm until you have taken Levest for seven days without a break.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
