Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. My name is Jennifer. I ve been taking 40 mg per day of Lexapro for many years and it is losing it s effectiveness. Plus it s too high a dosage, or so I ve read. Can Lexapro - say 20 mg be combined with Prozac? If not, what would you suggest. I can only take the SSRI s - not the drug class that Effexor is in. I m a little nervous too as I m 65 yrs old and had a heart attack 6 yrs ago but no heart damage. I will be seeing my Psychiatrist in a week.
Lexapro and Prozac are in the same class of medications and it is not safe to take them both.
It increases the risk for side effects and it does not really make sense to take them at the same time.
Generally, it is recommended to try one of them and if it does not help in optimal dose then the other one can be tried.
In your case, if Lexapro is not helping you anymore your doctor might consider to replace it with Prozac and see if this helps you better but the two drugs cannot be used together to help with symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
