Can N-Acetyl Cysteine Be Taken While On Effexor And Wellbutrin?

I have had brain zaps or brain shocks following cessation of Effexor, and these shocks have continued intermittently over several years. I spoke with a psychiatrist friend of mine, who suggested using NAC 300 Mg. q d and up to 600 mg q d to lessen the effects. I will also hopefully be starting back on Wellbutrin 100 mg., XR as well. What is your opinion on the use of of NAC.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

N Acetylcysteine is commonly used in many psychiatric illnesses. You can continue your routine drugs along with NAC as no drug interactions were described with it. NAC is a very safe drug and side effects are very minimal apart from rare minor side effects like urticaria and rashes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
