Can Prolia Be Taken While Having Osteoporosis?

After taking actonel, evista, and fosamax for osteoporosis, I suffered stomach issues, including ulcers that my doctor said resulted from these drugs. I have received reclast infusions for 5 years, with no side effects. It has been very effective in increasing my bone density by 18%. Now I am being told that I cannot receive reclast because I have received 5 doses. Can you please tell me why. Also, my doctor is suggesting prolia. I have researched, and found the potential side effects quite disturbing. How safe is prolia, and what happens if I don t medicate at all?

Hello,

You have already taken a complete course of Reclast that could be given. Taking more of it will only cause side effects like tremors, hyperesthesia, muscle cramps, osteonecrosis, flu-like illness, arthritis, proteinuria, hypernatremia, hyperkalemia, etc.

You can take Prolia if you have been prescribed by your treating GP. However, if you are concerned about the side effects, you can stop medications for some time & assess how your system functions. Then decide whether you need medicines or not.

In the meantime, you can take nutritious food rich in calcium, magnesium & minerals. Do regular exercises, avoid addictions if any (caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, drugs, etc). Take vitamin D & E supplements.

You may not need any medications if you are fine, but if you have issues you can visit your GP & have HRT (hormone replacement therapy) done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
