Can Promethazine Be Used While On Excedrin?

The local pharmacist has little information about promethazine. I am concerned about taking orally or using dermatological application of promethazine with pain killers such as excedrin migraine for my severe and frequent migraines (2-4 times a month, sometimes lasting 3 days each). The neurologist prescribed it, but said nothing about all the potential side effects. I have only seen her twice, both times last year, because she is very expensive, and thus she really doesn t know my condition well, though I believe she is a good neurologist.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Promethazine belongs to a group of drugs called 'phenothiazines'. It is used to treat allergic symptoms and motion sickness.
Excedrin contains a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. Excedrin is used to treat pain caused by tension headaches, migraine headaches and menstrual cramps.
Certain drug interactions has been reported among people who take Excedrin and Promethazine together.
Hence, it would be ideal for you to consult your treating doctor for an opinion in this regard before taking the medications together.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
