Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I want to know about Prozac and Zocor? Which is an inhibitor and which is an inducer and why would I stop the Prozac that a client is taking for depression that is taking Zocor? I am so glad that you are responding. What role does CYP450 and 3A4 play? I will not pay for this. I will continue to search.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I have reviewed your inquiry regarding why Zocor and Prozac should not be prescribed together and question on CYP450 and 3A4 play. I advise that there is no reason not to take Zocor and Prozac together according to drug/drug interactions checkers. Prozac is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor meaning it makes more serotonin available to the body by preventing its uptake back into the cell before it is utilized. In that respect it would be an 'inducer' as you call it. Zocor is an antihyperlipidemic in that it inhibits the uptake of cholesterol and decreases LDL and triglycerides in the bloodstream. It is an HMGCOA-reductase inhibitor and in that respect it would fit your description of an 'inhibitor'. CYP450 are membrane associated proteins involved in specific biochemical pathways similar to the definition of 3A4 except 3A4 is a specific enzyme in the CYP450 cytochrome oxidase system particularly responsible for the detoxification of toxins and chemicals.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
