Can Rabipur First Round Of Vaccination Be Taken On The Buttocks?

It was a minor bite arnd 7 pm. I washed the wound with soap and next day around 2pm i was injected with rabipur but over buttock. But for the 2 dose(3rd day) i enquired from another doctor and he injected that dose on the arm muscle and all other doses. So is it okay that my first dose was on the buttock as all the other doses were on arm only muscle only ??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Rabipur vaccine should not be given in the buttocks. As per the recommendation deltoid muscle (upper and outer quadrant of the arm) is ideal for the administration of this vaccine.

Because of fat present in the buttock region slows the vaccine absorption and hence may impair the protection against rabies, it is not advisable to inject rabipur in the buttock regions.

So, as per the guidelines you have to take five intramuscular injections in deltoid muscle only, one dose each given on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28. Day 0 indicates the date of administration of the first injection of vaccine.

So, you need to take an extra dose in compensation for the first dose which was mistakenly given in the buttock.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
